Field of ViewIf you choose a camera with a very wide field of view, at least 160 degrees, you can expect to see every part of the room in front of the camera. The widest field of view in our review is the D Link DCS 2630L at 180 degrees. A wide field of view, which the majority of the cameras we reviewed have, is anything larger than 80 degrees, and it works best if you mount the camera high in a corner that overlooks the room. Digital ZoomDigital zoom allows you to select part of the video and enlarge it. While this helps you get a closer look at something, the quality of a digitally enlarged video won't match that of the original. The Samsung SmartCam HD Pro has the highest digital zoom in the review at 10x.

Ring says it stores the recordings for two months. Many law enforcement agencies nationwide said the idea to partner with Ring came after the company promoted its product at law enforcement conferences. Some departments have chosen to simply use Ring's Neighbors app, which encourages residents to share videos of suspicious activity. Other agencies agreed to provide subsidies, matched by Ring, to offer hundreds of discounted cameras in hopes of tapping into footage of residential streets, yards and sidewalks. And some police chiefs raffle off the devices. Ring would not disclose the number of communities with such partnerships.

While it's not as sleek as the Ring Video Doorbell Pro and lacks the brilliant smart lock controls of the August Doorbell Cam Pro, the Ring Video Doorbell 2 has the best balance of features we've seen in a smart doorbell. Foremost is the doorbell's easy installation, you can install it anywhere if you run it off the battery, but it can also connect it to your existing doorbell chime to keep it powered all the time. Its excellent video quality shows enough detail day and night, even though it didn't perform as well as some competitors in our testing. The removable battery pack is easier to charge than the original Ring's battery, which required removing the entire unit from the wall.
